My wife and I spent a lovely evening strolling around the locks in this sleepy Ontario town. We went out for supper with an aunt and uncle (who insisted on buying, god bless 'em) to Rob Roy's. I had Scottish beer. It was good.
(While I'm god blessing people, god bless my wife's mum, who is house- and dog-sitting the entire time we're away. She drove five hours up from her own home to do it. Thanks Mum-number-two!)
After, Amy and I strolled around the waterways where the small boats go up and down in little water elevators. It was a beautiful evening for it after most of our vacation so far has been overcast and sometimes a little drizzly. Neither of us has cared about that so far; it's just been real swell to be away from home.
At one point on our stroll, Amy let out what can only be called a blood-curdling scream and dashed rapidly behind the security of her husband. There, in the grass just a short distance from our sandaled feet, was a garter snake! Overcoming her initial fear, we followed it and got a few pictures. There was a tell-tale bulge in its midsection, indicating a recent feeding. So my wife had not been in any real danger after all. Close one. That was, however, the loudest scream I've ever heard my wife utter. Something, apparently, I'm going to have to work on.
After we got home from our walk, the boy had been fed and entertained by the relations, leaving me just to bathe him and put him in his new pyjamas. (After more than a year, he still gets new stuff wherever he goes. I'm thinking of joining a new religion just so I can be 'born again'.) He then spent the next hour galloping around the living room on all fours, shaking a pair of maraccas he found under an end table while giggling hysterically and bouncing to the beat of whatever was on the stereo at the time. He kept his father, mother and aunt nicely entertained.
At one point, he was standing, clinging to the aforementioned end table when his mom extended her arms and asked him to come to her. Without any trace of hesitation, he released his grip on the table, rotated his body to face his mother, and toppled forward, completely secure in the knowledge that someone he loved and trusted implicitly was going to catch him and snuggle him to her breast.
My son amazes me a little more each and every day. He's going to be walking very soon. THEN, the current dog and soon-to-be-new puppy had better watch out...
Hey, Simon... glad to hear you and the wife and son are having a good time. My trip to Hawaii was heavenly, and I did NOT want to come home. Oh, well...nothing lasts forever, I guess. Anyway, enjoy, and have a safe journey home. Tina
