Canada's flag just turned 40 years old today.
I didn't even know until I read the CBC article. So happy birthday, you wonderful Red and White Symbol, you.
For those interested, prior to 1965, Canada flew the Red Ensign. A derivative of the British Union Jack. For me, the name brings to mind images of that hapless first man down in the transporter on numerous Star Trek episodes. Woe be unto the red-shirted man who was first into combat. He will be remembered.
Hmmm... Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to have kept that for our country instead.
(I'm sometimes amazed at the relative youth of this, the second-largest country in the whole world.)
Wow. I had no idea. I hate to admit it but I sort of like the old flag. They should have just gotten rid of the British Union Jack thing in the corner and centered the shield. That would have been a very cool looking flag! I've always liked the maple leaf flag though. It's attractive and seems very appropriate.
