I have come to have more respect for Wil Wheaton after reading this site. I am one of the legions of Star Trek: The Next Generation fans that grew to despise the fellow. I still have a bad taste in the back of my throat. But it is derived from the character, not the man. He seems to take self-deprecation to new, uh, heights?
Which gets me to thinking about blogging in general. I've spent some small amount of time the past week randomly clicking on various blog links to see what a non-scientifically randomly selected group of people are talking about. Many of them are talking about the same thing(s). It's amazing how many people grab an article from the day's headlines and post a link to it on their blog with a one or two line opinion to validate its presence. The number of posts I scanned by in the past day just mentioning the recent Cheney-Edwards vice-presidential debate was staggering. This is not to say that I think all these people are wrong in doing so. Simply that I intend to steer a slightly different course.
So instead of going into a relatively hypocritical diatribe on the pointlessness of myriad people posting similar thoughts on the same topic ad nauseum, I will offer the following pledge:
I, Simon Fraser, do solemnly swear to invest such time and effort into the composition of my posts that, even in the event they are excruciatingly topical, they will be derived primarily from my own thoughts and not a lacklustre regurgitation of a different publication. So help me God, and keep me steadfast through life.
Amen
I'm right there with ya, pal.
