I received an Email from my mother today with some surprising information about a childhood friend. Part of the surprise was in even receiving any information about him. Jason and I grew up and went to school together from elementary school right up through high school. I think we spent a couple of grades in different schools, but for the most part our relationship was relatively continuous through to graduation.
And then, as is often the case after high school, you lose touch with some, most or all of those friends from whom you were inseparable and absolutely couldn't live without and made fervent promises that, "I know it happens that friends lose touch after high school, but it sure isn't going to happen to US!"
I can honestly say that I haven't kept in touch with anybody that I graduated with. Not a one. I think a large part of the reason being that I developed stronger, more intimate friendships in university than I had in high school. Jason's was one of the few friendships I had growing up of any real significance.
So anyway, Jason just got married in July, is expecting a baby this coming January and is currently serving with the Canadian armed forces overseas in Afghanistan. (That's him against the backdrop of the city of Kabul.) His wife and progeny are expecting him back home in February. And included in that Email from my mother was an Email address for Jason. Perhaps I'll drop him a line and shock him right out of his combat boots.
